Named as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997, the charming town of Portovenere is one of the most beautiful coastal villages in Italy. Portovenere has been inspired by poets and authors since years and it is no surprise that part of the area in this town is rightfully known as the Gulf of Poets. The town is very close to the famous Cinque Terre but isn’t as run down by mass tourism as the 5 terre. I would strongly suggest you to visit this town, it is a nice alternate to the Cinque Terre.
How to Reach:
From Cinque Terre:
If you are staying in Cinque Terre and want to visit Portovenere, take a boat that runs from any of the 4 towns (except Corniglia) to Portovenere. The service runs from March 1 until the end of October. You will be in Portovenere in the blink of an eye!
From La Spezia:
Portovenere can also be reached by bus from Mercato Nord bus stop in La Spezia. It is an easy bus ride of 15 minutes. To get to La Spezia from any of the Cinque Terre villages, take a train. It is only one stop away from Riomaggiore.
