One of the reasons I visited Modica was its chocolate. Renowned all over the world, Modica is a paradise for chocolate lovers and has insane amount of shocolate cannoli, chocolate pastries, chocolate bars, chocolate drinks and everything chocolate around!
One of the most famous institutions of chocolate in Modica is Antica Dolceria Bonajuto. The Bonajuto family provides chocolate and chocolate products since the 1880s. They make chocolate in an ancient way traditionally similar to the way the Aztecs (an ancient civilization of Mexico) made. Commendable isn’t it??
A bar of chocolate from Bonajuto includes only a few basic ingredients- rich cocoa, sugar and spices. There are different flavored bars too and I was astounded by some of the range such as cinnamon, vanilla, beef, figs and honey.
It is note worthy how the process of making the chocolate has been preserved over the years. I wish the lady at the counter was more helpful to me though but she did mention that one can order products online too.
I could go back to Modica only for its chocolate or for its chocolate festival –Chocobarocco.
Modican chocolates were one of my precious buys. I owned several of these pretty packaged bars in the picture below and still left with one 😉
