A Roman Food Tour in Trastevere

Rome as a city can be so wonderful yet so overwhelming at the same time. It is definitely important to feel the pace of the Eternal city and I feel the best way to do it is to understand through its food. So when I was approached by The Roman Guy to do a food tour in Rome, I thought it would be a great way to see the hidden food spots of the city. Here’s my experience of a food tour in Trastevere in Rome

Food Tour in Trastevere

I took the Local Foodie Tour in Trastevere. The tour started at Campo de’ Fiori where our small group of 7 foodies met, a mixed bunch of people from across the world. Our guide, Melissa, originally from Naples came from a family with background in food and seemed very passionate about it.

We made our first stop at a cheese store where we tasted 5 different types of cheese from all over Italy! It was heavenly just being there. With a generous amount of Prosecco, we ate the different type of cheese and I have to say Burrata is and always will be my favorite. I was wistfully reminded of my adventures in Puglia.

Our next stop was something that was on my bucket list thanks to fellow blogger Natalie. She had mentioned going to Dar Filettaro for its Filetti di Baccala in one of her posts and that’s exactly where I wanted to go too! And we did! Our group was served a hot plate of deep fried fish called “Baccala” with a pitcher of white wine. It was a killer combination + the fish was so delicious! The place was so off the tourist track that I only saw locals around. This also made the service better….

Next started a 10 minutes walk to the enchanting neighbourhood of Trastevere. We stopped at a small bistro that I could have easily missed. It was super cozy and cute and right at the beginning of Trastevere. The owners, who use organic ingredients in everything they make, happily served us wine with cheese, meat and bruschette! I surprised myself as I fell in love with a cheese and jam combination. I was loving this food tour in Trastevere already!

Melissa mentioned that we were half way through our tour and I believed so was my tummy. But I was ready to have a slice of pizza and that’s just what our next stop was. Pizza al taglio (pizza by the slice) was the next thing to eat at another little adorable place in Trastevere’s lively streets. The shop was short and just apt. What a great food tour indeed!

The Roman Guy: Local Foodie Tour in Trastevere

Our second to last food stop was dinner with two types of pasta- Cacio e pepe and Amatriciana- classic Roman dishes! We were informed of their backgrounds and our group enjoyed it with wine and a plate of Parmigiana.

The Roman Guy: Local Foodie Tour in Trastevere

We ended the tour with the classic gelato! (No pic sorry) I chose hazelnut and melon as my flavors. Divine on a hot summer’s day! This food tour in Rome was just what I needed.

WHAT I LOVED:

All in all it was a great food tour as it gave insight into the food of the Romans. The tour group being small also added to the fun. I would especially like to highlight the food quantity which was apt and sufficient. My stomach gave a happy clap at the end.

WHAT COULD HAVE BEEN BETTER:

Even though I loved the food at the tour, I would have appreciated a better guide. Possibly someone who is fun and energetic and sort of leads through to the tour. You know?? It can totally up the whole tour!

Disclaimer: I was a guest at The Roman Guy’s Food Tour. However, all opinions expressed here are solely my own. Big thanks to Sian who was the Marketing Voyager at The Roman Guy at the time of the tour. Sian-see you again in Rome or India!

wow!!! this is super.. suggest a nice place to stay in Rome. I am so lost, would love to be near Termini just in case I want to take off somewhere. I have never stayed in a hostel and considering doing a dorm stay this time.
I would also love to do a day out with a local to see the sights and try some local cuisine. I have 5 days in Rome.

Oh Trastavere! The very word conjures up a gastronomic dream. The Baccala looks delicious. I could reach out through the screen here. And lose myself once again in those beautiful streets of Trastavere. Sigh.

Yeah, Trastevere! I was there on Saturday with my new American friends. We only had gelato, no other food, but I love that place so much. It reminds me of the Old Town of Ljubljana a little. 😉 Sounds like a yum tour and I’ll have that baccala’ sooner or later. 🙂

Hello. Thanks for your appreciation!! It really is very kind. how fun! September isn’t far. Just to let you know that I do travel planning to Italy as a profession now. However, for a quick suggestion I’d say for first trip go this way- Rome- Orvieto-Florence- Tuscany area and Milan OR Milan- Venice- Florence and Tuscany and end in Rome. Hope this helps

I have already been to Milan and Venice for work. So skipping Milan. Here’s the plan =
        Venice – Verona – Florence – Siena – Rome.

That is a good plan. you can also visit more of the countryside and keep Siena as base. Or florence as base. it will help you see more of Tuscany 🙂
