Why Orvieto Deserves More Hype (And Why I’d Return)

Orvieto wasn’t part of the plan. It never really is, is it? While most visitors chase the Tuscan light or the Roman ruins, this quiet Umbrian hill town sits content on its perch watching the world pass by from a distance. I didn’t expect much from my day trip here, honestly. But Orvieto greeted me with stillness. Orvieto definitely deserves more hype and I’d return for sure. This hill town in Umbria is the perfect slow travel destination and I think you should add it to your Italy list!

Where is Orvieto??

Orvieto is located in southern Umbria, perched dramatically atop a tufa cliff made of volcanic rock. It’s about 90 minutes from Rome by train, making it an ideal day trip or a peaceful overnight stop on your Italy itinerary. The train station sits at the base of the cliff, and a quick funicular ride takes you up to the historical town center. That alone was so charming!

1. The Duomo That Stunned Me

I’ve seen my fair share of Italian churches. But the Duomo di Orvieto left me stunned. It is simply gorgeous! Striped in black and white with a gold mosaic façade that glimmers in the light, the cathedral is simply breathtaking. I spent a long time sitting on the steps in the May heat and didn’t even go inside for a while. Sometimes, the outside is enough. One of the main reasons I feel Orvieto deserves more hype is because of the DUOMO!

2. Orvieto is perfect to wander around

Orvieto is a town to wander around, there’s not like a hundred things to tick off the list but still a lot to see and discover. I loved stopping from store to store, had a gelato on a staircase somewhere and sat at one of the places at the piazza for lunch. I walked without a map and a lot of places were even closed but even if a little sleepy, it felt right. Orvieto was charming and beautiful!

3. Umbria on a Plate and in a Glass!

One of the best parts about visiting Orvieto is the local food and wine, like all of Italy 😉 This region is known for its white wine and sipping a glass of Orvieto Classico while watching the people is a memory I hold close. The trattorias in Orvieto made everything more personal and warm too.

4. That View from the Edge

One of the things I didn’t expect was the view of the countryside! Orvieto offers some of the most beautiful panoramic views I’ve ever seen in Italy. Standing at the Torre del Moro, looking out over the countryside and getting that 360° idea of Umbria was super cool! I was struck by just how untouched everything felt. There was no loud buses or ticket lines and tons of space to breathe.

5. Beneath the Surface

Did you know Orvieto has an entire underground city that was built by the Etruscans?? I didn’t until I found myself reading on it before my trip. Unfortunately I didn’t book a tour neither did I visit the underground side of Orvieto but I’ve kept it on my list for next time.

Final Thoughts

Orvieto is not flashy. It doesn’t scream for attention. But that’s exactly why I loved it. If you’re someone who loves quiet beauty and slow moments, I think you’ll love it too. It’s not just a stop between Rome and Florence. It’s a destination on its own right which I’d love to re-visit because one of my dear friend lives there! So just get on the train, take the funicular up, and start exploring!
