Rome to Florence train- my first scenic journey in Italy

Today I’m taking you all back in time to my first ever train ride in Italy. In 2013, I took my first train journey from Rome to Florence which was also the most scenic journey I ever took in my life!! Traveling between these two cities was easy and comfortable and I’m so pleased to be sharing this with you today.

Rome to Florence train- my first scenic journey in Italy

My train journey was planned well in advance with Trenitalia. I had pre-booked the tickets a few months in advance from India for about €`13. It was a lovely September morning when I took the 8am train from Roma Termini to Firenze Santa Maria Novella.

The distance between the cities was around 230 kms and it was supposed to take about 1 hour and 35 minutes.

I made myself comfortable with a copy of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, a gift from my friend who I was traveling with on my first trip. In 2 days it was my birthday and she had made sure I received something I truly love. And what was better than a gorgeous book written by one of my favorite authors?!

I wanted to read as much during the journey. I dove right in the book as soon as we sat.

But what a mistake that was!

Because I couldn’t even finish one page.

I was so naïve. I didn’t even know what Italy was!

The outside is so distracting in Italy. Beauty is all around. And I had no idea what was coming next.

As soon as we left the city of Rome, the train crossed an area of the countryside with patches of bright green grass and homes scattered both on the right and left.

I was mesmerized.

Sitting on the right side of the train (which in my opinion is more scenic) I saw expansive views of the Tuscan countryside.

It didn’t take me long before I was drowned in the scenery. There was so much to take it.

In a few minutes, I saw some of the most breathtaking land of Italy!! I wanted to snap a hundred pictures but of course it wasn’t possible with the train moving.

The train passed through medieval hill top towns, each of which was characterized by it’s bell tower. There were several small villages and frazione that I passed without knowing. In fact now that I think of it, I may have passed through famous towns such as Orvieto and Arezzo too. But in 2013 I was unaware of them.

The landscape of the train journey from Rome to Florence was one of the most scenic and gorgeous. It is indescribable in many ways.

I feel extremely fortunate to go back in time just by closing my eyes and landing in Italy. I can still feel the warm September sun on my face.

It’s nothing but Italy and me!

Have you taken the train ride from Rome to Florence?? I hope you get the chance someday, if you haven’t!
